Trainee Solicitor (2020)
JD | The Chinese University of Hong Kong
Betty Ho Prize in Law
People in the firm are genuinely forthcoming and approachable and I benefited immensely from such a collegial environment as a vacation scheme student.
I was offered a training contract upon completing my vacation scheme at Timothy Loh in 2019, and will begin my 2-year training period upon completion of my PCLL in 2020.
Prior to enrolling in the JD program of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, I acquired my LLM in International Commercial Law at University College London and my undergraduate LLB at Shandong University in China. I look forward to building my legal career in Hong Kong and cannot think of a better place to do so than Timothy Loh.
The Recruitment Process
I did not have to submit a separate application to be considered for a training contract as the firm traditionally selected trainee solicitors from participants of the vacation scheme. As such, your performance during your time in Timothy Loh is essentially the interview and test which qualifies you to be considered for a training contract. As for the vacation scheme application process, it involves an online application and two rounds of interviews, which respectively focus on understanding you as a candidate and gauging your skills through a variety of technical, situational and behavioural scenarios.
During my time as a vacation scheme student, I was immediately given major responsibilities on active client files as I worked closely with junior lawyers and partners of the firm. Throughout the process, I gained first-hand experience in live legal matters and the culture of the firm as vice-versa, through the daily interactions, the firm acquired a deeper understanding of my technical ability, communication skills and work ethic and was able to assess whether I was a good cultural fit within the team. This is why it is so important to participate in a vacation scheme with the firm you are interested in joining as it is only through personal interfacing within the workplace will both parties be able to truly understand and determine the suitability of your candidacy in the long run.
The firm takes a very transparent approach and offered me a realistic picture of a day in the life in the firm. Everything I learnt about the firm during my contact with the hiring partner was an accurate representation of the scope of work and culture of the firm. People in the firm are genuinely forthcoming and approachable and I benefited immensely from such a collegial environment as a vacation scheme student.
