As a pre-eminent Hong Kong law firm, our lawyers at Timothy Loh LLP practice across multiple legal disciplines but with a historical focus on the finance industry.

This approach trains you to identify the full range of legal issues that may affect clients and to gain a deeper insight into these issues. This will enable you to craft innovative solutions outside of defined market norms and to understand risks in both transactions and the commercial context.

Our junior lawyers benefit from senior level attention, accelerating the development of their individual skills. We believe this translates to better client results.

Too great of an emphasis is often placed on a bigger firm being better. To this day, the law remains a profession whose members distinguish themselves based on technical excellence, creativity and sound judgement in the client’s commercial context. These are the attributes that we aim to cultivate in our lawyers.

From the beginning I was exposed to active client matters and was invited to join discussions with senior lawyers on substantive matters of law. For instance, I had the chance to look into financial regulatory laws that might be applicable to cryptocurrencies and contribute to the legal analysis for a client.

My experience was different from some of my peers who were given monotonous tasks of a more clerical nature.

As I embarked upon my traineeship, I continued to work closely with partners and associates, and was provided with continued guidance and clear instructions to prepare me for the challenges inherent in complex legal issues and unfamiliar business settings.

I also valued the fact that partners were willing to invest the time to engage in in-depth discussions and interactions with trainees. The topics were not limited to legal issues encountered in the file, but included commercial considerations, as well as tactical considerations in handling third parties and the firm’s business operations.

For client work, I did not simply submit work product and receive brief written comments. I was expected to conduct a comprehensive analysis, to share my proposed approach with partners and to participate in the decision making process to finalize the approach for clients. Through observation, we can contrast our thinking with their perspectives, thereby understanding how we can improve.

Overall, our training goes beyond purely acquiring knowledge and work experience by completing tasks, but to sharpen our mind and judgment so we can devise a plan to resolve problems independently.

“The mentorship and support from experienced attorneys have been instrumental to me as a legal professional”

What do you enjoy about working

at the firm as a trainee?

I really enjoy being able to participate deeply with each file thorough out the entire process, whether it be litigation or SFC enquiries.

From the day I started, I have been included in drafting affidavits and SFC responses, and involved in client meetings and daily client communications. Working at Timothy Loh LLP allows me to brush up both my soft skills and hard skills quickly as a trainee.

What is the best career advice

that you have received?

Be humble and learn from your mistakes. Don’t expect to get everything right the first time around.

Since many of these responsibilities are new to me, at times I have felt frustrated when I felt my work wasn’t up to standard.

But the team at Timothy Loh LLP has been very encouraging and helpful, reminding me to trust the process. Although the transition from a law student to a trainee isn’t easy, a good learning attitude and staying humble will lead junior lawyers far in their traineeship.

I believe that’s the best career advice I have ever received, and I will always remember it in my heart.

Biggest lesson learnt as a

vacation scheme student?

The most important thing I learnt at Timothy Loh LLP was how much trust the firm places in its interns. I was given intellectually stimulating work that challenged me to think on my feet, and I was encouraged to find solutions on my own. I realised that learning often comes from trying new things, even if it means making mistakes along the way.

What did you enjoy most about

working at the firm?

The people were the best part. My colleagues were not only knowledgeable and professional, but also genuinely approachable and supportive. Their willingness to guide me and share insights created a collaborative and respectful environment where I felt encouraged to contribute meaningfully.

What advice would you give to

other vacation scheme students?

Make sure that you fully embrace the experience and make the most of every opportunity to learn. It is a chance to gain exposure to challenging work in a supportive environment, so stay open-minded, ask questions, and enjoy the process!
